Hidden Elements Answer Key

Every page in March Like a Monkey — from A to Z — includes hidden elements that match its letter. These objects provide an additional opportunity to practice that sound, while building vocabulary. Pages include three types of elements:

  • Objects or creatures (easier)
    • Example: an airplane on the A page
  • Characters’ actions or feelings (harder)
    • Example: The fear on the frog’s face on the F page
  • Setting or background elements (harder)
    • Example: the brown coloring of the bears’ fur on the B page

Guidance on Hidden Elements

While objects are more concrete and will be easier to notice, actions/ feelings and setting elements require more abstraction to identify. In practice, this means that younger readers may benefit from more scaffolding with these.

Consider using prompts like the examples below.

Objects:

  • “What do you see that starts with the letter ‘A’?”
  • More scaffolded: “I see 3 things that start with the letter ‘A’. Let’s see if we can find them all!”

Actions/ Feelings:

  • “What are the characters on this page doing? How might they be feeling?”
  • More scaffolded: “It looks like the ants might be upset. Can you think of another word for this feeling that starts with ‘A’?”

Setting/ Background Elements:

  • “What do you notice about the colors in this picture? How about where it’s taking place?”
  • More scaffolded: “Let’s look at the colors of the animals. Do you see any that start with ‘B’?”
